About the moisture meters, I have three models to recommend:
1. First choice is Hydrosense soil moisture meter from Campbell Scientific.
It is accurate and easy to use. It is sturdy. And, there is a Japanese
distributor:
The Taiyo Keiki Co., Ltd.
1-12-3, Nakajyujo, Kita
Tokyo 114-0032 Japan
Phone: 81-3-5963-5361
Fax: 81-3-5963-5362
Email: campbell@taiyokeiki.co.jp
Web: www.taiyokeiki.co.jp
2. The second choice is Theta-probe. This is the same as used by Gordon McKie at St. Andrews. What you need is "Theta-kit". This is accurate and can be used in any soil for accurate soil moisture reading. The website is:

The only problem with this meter is the measuring rods are delicate. You must use it carefully, especially in dry soil or compacted soil. For golf course greens it is usually ok. I use it for a project at Hong Kong and it has been great. I do not know if this company has a distributor in Japan.
3. The third choice is TDR-100 or or TDR-200 or TDR-300 from Spectrum Technologies. I bought this meter (TDR-300) for my company. However, the meter does not give accurate reading when the salt in the soil is high. Therefore, this meter is not my favorite. But it is accurate and easy to use if the soil is low in salt. I do not know if there is a Japanese distributor.
